City Administration

The City Manager is the Chief Executive of the City of Oak Park and is responsible for the efficient administration of all City departments.

Among many responsibilities, the City Manager is charged with supervising all City personnel, the preparation and submittal of the annual budget, enforcing municipal ordinances, and implementing the policies and direction set by City Council.

City-Manager Form of Government

The council-manager form is the system of local government that combines the strong political leadership of elected officials in the form of a council or other governing body, with the strong managerial experience of an appointed local city manager. The mayor is a member of the elected city council in this form.  The form establishes a representative system where all legislative authority is concentrated in the elected council and where the council hires a professionally trained city manager to supervise all city staff and oversee the delivery of public services.

Meeting with the Manager:
Featuring Leslie McCurdy

Welcome to another edition of “Meeting with the Manager” with host Erik Tungate. As part of our Black History Month celebration, we are proud to welcome Leslie McCurdy, an accomplished playwright, actor, performance artist, singer and dancer. Ms. McCurdy made a visit to Oak Park on January 28 to perform her one-person performance celebrating the "Story of Harriet Tubman."  She returned to City Hall the next day to share the story about how the play came to life, the significance of Harriet Tubman, and what motivates Ms. McCurdy to continue - after two decades - to share this story. And, there's more.

Meeting with the Manager:
Featuring Pastor James A. Friedman

City Manager Erik Tungate has the distinct pleasure of taping a monthly program called "Meeting with the Manager." In this month's episode, City Manager Tungate welcomes Pastor James A. Friedman, President and Founder of James A. Friedman Training and Consulting, LLC., and Oak Park Public Safety Director Steve Cooper. This month's focus is on diversity and cultural awareness as it applies to community relations, current affairs and public safety. Pastor Friedman is often called upon by municipalities, school systems, corporations and non-profits to train on the topic of diversity and cultural awareness.

Meeting with the Manager:
Special Edition

"In this month's show, we will hear from my top leadership staff in our Public Safety Department on a variety of topics, including their take on the recent unfortunate incidences that grip the nation and have been widely reported in the media," said City Manager Tungate. "I will then bring in a special panel of Oak Park stakeholders representing the business community and the nieghborhoods with a wide array of backgrounds. I will give them a chance to weigh in and ask our Public Safety leadership the difficult questions many of you have always wanted to ask but never had the chance, until now."
