Oak Park has been recognized for its continued commitment to urban forestry, earning a 2025 Tree City USA Growth Award from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the Arbor Day Foundation.
The award highlights communities that go beyond the core Tree City USA standards through innovation, expanded programming and increased public engagement in maintaining and growing their urban tree canopy. Oak Park is one of just 14 communities across Michigan to receive the distinction for work completed in 2025.
“Receiving the Tree City USA Growth Award is a point of pride for Oak Park,” City Manager Erik Tungate said. “This recognition reflects our continued commitment to sustainability, responsible tree care, and long-term investments that enhance the health, beauty and livability of our community.”
Other Michigan communities receiving the Growth Award include Ann Arbor, Berkley, Birmingham, Ferrysburg, Frankfort, Grandville, Livonia, Ludington, Marshall, Muskegon, Novi, Portage and Rochester Hills.
In total, 122 communities across the state, along with seven college campuses and seven healthcare campuses, earned Tree City USA recognition this year. The announcement coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Tree City USA program, a national initiative promoting sound urban forestry and environmental stewardship.
City officials say the recognition reflects Oak Park’s ongoing investment in conservation and sustainability, with benefits that include improved air quality, reduced urban heat and enhanced neighborhood character.
