Animal Control
Animal Control helps keep pets, residents and neighborhoods safe by enforcing local ordinances, promoting responsible pet ownership and responding to concerns about domestic animals.Services include pet licensing, animal control enforcement, stray‑animal pickup, lost‑and‑found support and guidance on wildlife and rodent issues.

Pet Ownership
Oak Park residents who own dogs or cats must follow local pet ownership requirements. These rules protect animals, promote responsible care and support public safety.Pet owner responsibilities
Dogs and cats six months or older must be licensed annually through the Department of Public Safety. Proof of rabies vaccination is required.
Residents may not keep more than three dogs or cats older than six months.
Outdoor pets must have adequate shelter, food and water at all times.
It is illegal to keep or own a vicious dog or cat.
Dogs and cats must be leashed when off the owner’s property.
Owners must immediately remove animal droppings from public or private property.
Excessive or habitual barking, yelping, howling or meowing is prohibited.
Unclaimed dogs and cats are transferred to the Michigan Humane Society four to seven days after intake.

One year:
- $7 (spayed/neutered)
- $16 (not spayed/neutered)
- $15 (spayed/neutered)
- $30 (not spayed/neutered)
Late fee:
- $10 if not licensed before Jan. 1 (not charged to new residents or newly acquired animals).
Payment notes:
- Point & Pay adds a 3 percent processing fee (minimum $1.50). Pay in person with cash, check or certified funds to avoid fees.
How to submit:
Email or in person: Email your application and documents to opps@oakparkmi.gov or deliver them to the Department of Public Safety, 13800 Oak Park Blvd.
After receiving confirmation, pay online through Point & Pay (link provided in the confirmation) or pay in person with no service fee.
Animal Code Enforcement
Animal Control Enforcement ensures compliance with city ordinances that apply to dogs, cats and private property code issues. Officers also provide guidance to residents about wildlife concerns.

Other Animal Facts
- Wildlife such as skunks, raccoons and opossums on private property are the responsibility of the homeowner.
- To report dead or injured animals on public property, contact the Municipal Services Department at (248) 691-7450.
- It is illegal to mistreat or abuse animals, or to place dangerous substances where animals may consume them.
