Do dogs and cats need to be on a leash?

Yes. Dogs and cats must be under reasonable control off the owner’s property. This means using a leash or harness, unless the animal is confined in a closed vehicle or carrier.

How many pets may I have?

Residents may have up to three dogs or cats combined.

Do they need a license?

Yes. Dogs and cats six months or older must be licensed.

How do I apply for an animal license?

You need a completed  animal-license-application.pdf , proof of rabies vaccination, and proof of sterilization (if applicable). Email your application and documents to sprister@oakparkmi.gov or deliver them to the Department of Public Safety, 13800 Oak Park Blvd. After you receive a confirmation, pay the license fee via Point & Pay (link provided in the confirmation) or pay at the counter (no processing fee).

Where are stray animals taken?

Strays are transported to the City Pound, 10600 Capital St.

  • Animal Control officers operate Mondays through Fridays, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Public Safety officers collect animals after hours.
  • Loose dogs are held for four days before being transferred to the Michigan Humane Society or Oakland County Animal Control.

Does Public Safety keep records of lost pets?

Yes, if the owner reports the missing animal at (248) 691‑7520.

Will the city pick up dead or lost animals?

Yes. Call Animal Control Code Enforcement at (248) 691‑7450.
 Public Safety does not pick up animals unless after hours.

Will Animal Control remove wildlife?

No. Residents must contact a private pest‑control company.
