Absentee voting
All registered voters in Michigan may vote by mail using an absentee ballot. Absentee ballots are available 40 days before every election.
Apply for an absentee ballot online or print the Absentee Voter Application and return it to the City Clerk's office.
To check your absentee ballot status, visit the Michigan Voter Information Center.
Permanent absentee ballot list
Voters can request to be added to the permanent ballot list. Voters on this list automatically receive absentee ballots for all future elections.
To be added, submit the Absentee Voter application or ask the Clerk’s Office for a permanent ballot list request form.
To be removed, send a signed letter to the Clerk’s Office asking to be removed.
Voting in person after receiving an absentee ballot
Voters on the permanent list may still vote in person. Bring your absentee ballot to your polling place or early voting site.
There you can:
- Surrender your absentee ballot and receive a new one, or
- Complete a voter affidavit to have a replacement ballot issued.
If you move
If you move within Michigan and update your address with your new city or township clerk, your permanent absentee status follows you.
If you receive a ballot not addressed to you
Write “Return to sender” or “No longer at this address” on the envelope and place it back in the mail.
Attempting to vote a ballot addressed to someone else is a felony.
